Grandma’s age old remedy for the common cold has now been shown to have scientific validity. Chicken soup won’t cure the cold or the flu, but it can help to alleviate symptoms such as aches, chills and fever. Teresa Hauguel of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Respiratory Diseases Branch cites a recent study by the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The study indicates that common chicken soup ingredients may have anti-inflammatory properties that inhibit the migration of neutrophils, cells that cause cold symptoms.
